Some of the lessons that Mr. Keating is teaching his students about life is ceasing the day or making the most of your life. How this is different from what Holden was told about "playing by the rules" was that playing by the rules didn't allow yourself to do anything you wanted to do in life, but ceasing the day or making the most of your life says pretty much that you should pretty much throw away the rules and do what you want in life.
